Technical Information

This OPEN module uses 3D medical animation. The animation has been linked from Vimeo and should play automatically when you click "play" on your computer.

Audio narration accompanies the visual animations. If you are working in a private place, please turn up the audio on your computer. If you are working in a public space, please make sure you have your earphones ready.

Module Design

This module begins with a Pretest on Obesity & Mental Health. The Pretest will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. Next, access the module competencies and the clinical case scenario. A 3D animation is embedded in the case scenario. The animation is approximately 3 minutes in length and will require both visual and audio attention. Animations may be viewed full-screen. Read the associated module references and review the point-of-practice resources.

The module will conclude with a Knowledge Translation Commentary, a Posttest, and a Reflective Exercise. The easily accessible PDF eLibrary of references and resources is an integral part of this module.

The entire module should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Educational Design

The OPEN Obesity & Mental Health module is based core competencies in Psychiatry, related CanMEDs roles, and associated principles from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

The Mental Health Core Competencies Steering Committee. 2014. Mental Health Core Competencies for Physicians. Ottawa, Ontario. Accessed on March 26, 2016 from http://www.royalcollege.ca/portal/page/portal/rc/common/documents/policy/mhcc_june2014_e.pdf.

Educational design of this module is framed by knowledge building theory (Scardamalia & Berieter, 2003) and important concepts of interactive learning and visual explanations for the applied knowledge and the translation of knowledge to practice to improve patient care (Lax, Russell, Nelles & Smith, 2009).
